Logo for Band on the Run

A couple of months after we had moved back to Chandigarh, we got a call from one of our old client. He wanted to meet us over a cup of coffee, to discuss about his upcoming project. We decided to meet at our all time favourite cafe ‘Barista’. Since we were meeting that client after almost an year, the discussion started with what all we were doing during the past months and why did we leave our so called lucrative jobs and other general stuff. Sipping coffee  and talking, the client disclosed about his upcoming project, a musical event called ‘Band on the Run’. The name was catchy and we quite liked it. We were asked to design a logo for this event, something which has the fun element, is very quirky, simple, has an appeal and leaves an impact. This is the brief that we got for designing the logo. We were given all the freedom to do anything, be wild, just play around.
The only thing specified to us by the client was whether the logo should only be the typo of Band on the Run or there should be some element as logo. When we started with the brainstorming sessions in our studio, we stumbled upon many ideas like a rocket, a tractor trolley, a spaceship etc.  But when you have a lot of freedom you get lost sometimes and something similar was happening with us. Spending hours and hours on the explorations we were not very satisfied. Here are a few explorations that we did.

Here the typo somewhat appealed to the client. Then we got some direction to move into.

While we were discussing the typo, we thought of literally making a band party or a band which is carried in marriages or functions. But then suddenly we had an idea, lets make an elephant. Since this was a musical event not restricted to a single city, it was a journey throughout India, so a minimalist elephant with a skate board got us going. Even our client liked this idea. For him it was something out of the box and he wanted us to execute it asap. The initial drawings were something like this.

Some explorations for the elephant.

The final logo came something like this
